Achieving World War 1

INTORDUCTION TO CHAPTER 13 ON WORLD WAR ONE

My blog is on Chapter 13 from my Modern World History Book. I have titled my blog Achieving World War 1. Chapter 13 is divided into four sections. This chapter states how nationalism, imperialism, and territorial disputes caused rival tensions between the Great Powers in Europe. After two alliances were forced, more tension stemmed from that. The two alliances formed were the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Entente consisted of Great Britain, France, and Russia. After, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was shot and killed, things took a turn for the worst. Since the killer of the Archduke was Serbian Austria wanted to punish Serbia. Austria did this by giving Serbia an ultimatum. Serbia tryed to negotiate, but Austria was not budging. On July 28th Austria ejected Serbia's offer and declared war on Serbia. Austria's declaration of war on Serbia sparked a chain reaction throughout the alliances. The alliances stuck to their pledges causing all of Europe to go to war. This was the begining of World War One. By doing this blog I hope to give people more of an understanding on the wars importance, and what occured during the war.

This art piece is titled "No Entry". It is a drawing of a soilder who is on watch. He is covering the mobilization in Les Vosges. The art piece was published on August 8, 1914.

This is a painting done by Eric Kennington. The painting is entitled "Gassed and Wounded". It was painted in 1918 on canvas. It helps to show what happened to soilders when they got gassed during war

This painting was painted in 1914. The painting is entitled Attack on the Village of Stary Korczyn by the Vienna First Infantry Regiment on December 22, 1914. It was pained by Alfred Basel.

3 IMPORTANT PEOPLE DURING THIS TIME

President Woodrow Wilson was of great importance during the time of World War One. He was president of the United States when World War One was taking place. The reason this man is of great importance during this time period is becasue he came up with a series of proposal. The series of proposals came to be known as the Fourteen Points. The Fourteen Points was a plan for achieving a just and lasting peace.

General Alfred Graf von Schlieffen was another imortant person in history during the time of the war. He came up with the Schlieffen Plan, which he named after himself. The plan was Germany's military plan at the outbreak of World War One. The main idea of the plan was to rapidly send German troops to defeat Russia and then after that move east to attack Russia. Speed was vital in order to achieve his plan.

Joe Hill, a world famous labor leader, was convicted of murder charges. These charges were trumped up charges brought against him. Despite worldwide protests and attemps made by President Wilson to intervene he was executed 21 months later. Befoe his execution he had written a letter to his friend, Bill Haywood. In the letter he wrote "Don't mourn-organize!"

US EVENTS THAT OCCURRED DURING WORLD WAR ONE

The 18th Amendment was passed by congress in October 1919. The amendment was known as the National Prohibition Act. This amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, exportation, or transportation of intoxicating liquors throughout the United States. After one year from the ratification, the 18th amendment would go into effect. This act would care crime rates to rise in the United States.

Connection <--> Time- My connection across time is the repeal of the 18th amendment. The 21st amendment repealed the 18th amendment in October 1933. The repeal was passed by President Roosevelt. The 21st amendment gave states the right to determine alcohol levels in their own state.Today, people still enjoy drinking alcohol, but have to be over the age of 21 to consume and buy it by law.

On July 22, 1916 there was a bombing in San Francisco, California. The bombing occurred at the Preparedness Day parade. The parade was organized by the city's chamber of commerce. The reason for the parade was to support America's possible entrance into World War One. The bomb was hidden inside of a suitcase. The bomb killed 10 people and wounded 40. Many thought that anti-war labor radicals were responsible. Later, labor leader, Tom Mooney and his assistant Warren Billings were convicted of first-degree murder

Connection <--> Time- My connection across time is the connection to the World Trade Center terrorist attacks. What happened at the Preparedness Day parade is just like what happened the day the World Trade Centers fell. At the Preparedness Day parade their were a group of people, like terrorists, that were against the parade and what it stood for. The group of terrorist who attacked us were against America and what it stands for. Both attacks were done based on different sets of beliefs.

SPOTLIGHT ON - THE ZIMMERMAN TELEGRAM

In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a letter from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman. Zimmerman sent the letter to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt. The letter contained an offer of United States territory to Mexico, but only if Mexico joined the German cause. The British made sure that it protected its intellligence, of the message, from detection by waiting to show the letter to the United States. On January 24,1917 the telegram was finally presented to President Woodrow Wilson of the United States. Word of the telegram hit the newpapers in America on March 1, 1917. On April 16, 1917, United State's Congress declared war on Germany and its allies. This telegram helped to draw the once neutral United States into the war.

3 Things I Learned:

1. I learned about a labor leader named Joe Hill, and how he was convicted of murder on trumped up charges.

2.I learned that the Zimmerman Telegram was written in a secret message consisting of numbers.

3.I learned that the United States did not get involved in the war until 1917.

2 Things That Interest Me:

1. The shooting and killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was a very interesting story.

2. The fact that the forces of nationalism, imperialism, and territorial disputes can cause tensions between nations that cause them to compete with one another.
